When an American flag has served its purpose and can no longer fly with dignity, it deserves a respectful farewell. The U.S. Flag Code recommends burning as the preferred method of retirement — and many organizations in your community hold regular ceremonies to do just that.

What the Flag Code Says
The United States Flag Code (4 U.S.C. § 8(k)) states: "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning."

What to Expect at a Ceremony
Bring Your Flag
Fold your worn flag respectfully and bring it to the ceremony. Most organizations accept flags from the public at no charge.
A Dignified Ceremony
The ceremony typically includes a reading of the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence, and the respectful burning of the flags.
